What to Do if the Wind Blows: 5 Tips to Prepare for a Windy Beach Session

Nobody hopes for a windy photo session—but if you've spent any time near the ocean, you know that even on the sunniest days, gusts can show up without warning. As a general rule, the beach almost always carries a bit of a breeze, and sometimes, those gentle gusts can pick up quickly.

While I’ll always do my best to schedule around extreme weather, here are a few simple tips to help you prepare—just in case the wind decides to make an appearance during your session!

1. Choose Your Outfit Wisely

Flowy dresses can look beautiful blowing in the breeze—but in strong wind, they can become hard to manage unless they are full length. If you’re unsure, opt for a more structured dress or an outfit with fitted elements to avoid constant adjusting. Avoid short skirts or anything too lightweight if wind is in the forecast.

2. Secure Your Hair

Some options to consider when dealing with the sea breeze are soft braids, a loose bun, a half-up style, or pulled back bangs. Not only will it keep your hair out of your face, but it can also add a beautiful, natural look to your photos. A little movement is lovely, so it all depends on the approach you want.

3. Keep Little Ones Cozy

Wind can feel chilly—especially for babies and toddlers. Bring a light sweater or cozy blanket to wrap them in between photos, just in case the breeze picks up.

4. Bring a Brush or Comb

A small brush or wide-tooth comb can be a game-changer during a windy session. They're perfect just in case you need a quick touch-up!

5. Embrace the Movement

Some of my favorite beach images come when we stop trying to control everything and simply go with the flow—literally. Wind-blown hair, twirling skirts, and the feeling of the ocean air add an ethereal, natural beauty to your session. A little wind reminds us that we’re not in a studio—and that’s part of the magic.

6. Trust the Process

I’ll guide you through it all with gentle direction and a calm pace. If things get a little wild, we’ll adjust, take breaks, and find sheltered areas if needed. Your only job is to love on your people—and let the breeze be part of the story.

Whether you’re planning a family session, maternity portraits, or senior photos on the beach, a bit of wind doesn’t have to ruin anything. With the right mindset and a little prep, we can still create something soft, beautiful, and true to your family.

Booking a session in Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island, or Conway? I’d love to help you prepare and create photos that feel like home—even with a breeze.

Warm hugs,

Meghan
